East Texas. Feb 14, 2022. #1. To conclude my series of threads looking back at military miniatures and toy soldiers of the era of the Civil War Centennial, roughly 1950's - 1970, I will feature those by the venerable French firm Mignot which merged with another to become CBG - Mignot around that time. Mignots are the "classic" European toy ...
An interesting topic indeed. Throughout my research there seems to be several reasons women enlisted. For instance Sarah Rosetta Wakeman took the name Lyon Wakeman because she was looking for adventure (like many men), she wanted to make money (like many men) and she died (from disease) doing what she wanted to do.
The William Britain's Company is a historic English firm that has been producing toy soldiers and other figures for well over a century and remain in business to this day. They achieved fame beginning around 1902 for their extensive lines of 54mm hollow-cast lead military figures called...
Vermont played a critical role in the Civil War, sending soldiers and supplies to the battles in the south. At one time, 10 percent of Vermont’s total population was fighting in the war – the highest per capita service of any state.
CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS AND THE "OTHER USES" FOR THEIR CANTEENS The uses of the canteen were manifold. Its chief duty as a factor in the war was the transportation of water, although it was found equally adapted to carrying some other things. It came in handy to the forager for milk, cider, or molasses.
It is "That Indispensable Civil War Coffee" by Ann Herzler. Also I found article, "Strong Enough To Float An Iron Wedge", where author talked about amount of coffee Union soldiers drank a day: "Up north, rations were generous at six cups a day, fueling Union soldiers as much as the drink does workers and students today.
Absolutely the best volume written on this subject is This Republic of Suffering, Death & Dying During the Civil War by Gilpen-Faust. Every aspect of the impact of mass death on individual families & the culture is in this remarkable book. Everybody who studies the Civil War should have this book on their shelf.

The regiment search function is also useful as it gives you a brief unit history (for Union units, the Dyers Compendium extract) and includes an admittedly unwieldy roster. Unfortunately the CWSS doesn't have much info beyond the name of the soldier, unit, and rank in/out.
The soldiers of a unit stuck together until their paths divided. They walked - got rides on farm wagons - went home - went a-wandering somewhere else. Took a train if they could get one. Rode a boat if a river went the right way. But basically, they walked.

The Illinois GenWeb site has a large collection of portraits, titled 'Photo Album of Illinois Civil War Soldiers.' 27 pages with around 16 photos per page. Most are identified with name and/or unit. Good for re-enactors as some are clear enough that details on uniforms can be seen.
