Ray was born in Columbus, Nebraska, and grew up in the neighboring village of Shelby, where he was educated in local public schools. [1] [2] Encouraged by his mother, he adopted photography as a hobby at the age of eleven and within a year was developing and printing photos that he had taken with a medium format Speed Graphic camera that he had been given. Logan Fontenelle was born at Fort Atkinson, Nebraska Territory on May 6, 1825. [2] [3] He was the oldest son of four born to Me-um-bane, a daughter of the Omaha principal chief Big Elk (1770–1846/1853), and her husband Lucien Fontenelle, a French-American fur trader from New Orleans.
The earliest settlers in the Stella area arrived in about 1855. [5] An August 1881 public meeting of local farmers led to an arrangement for the Missouri Pacific Railroad to be extended to that point. [6] [7] Stella was platted the same year, and was named for Stella Clark, the daughter of the original owner of the town site. [8]
