Sometimes, you find a drawing or similar image useful for a Wikipedia article, that was saved as a JPEG but should have been saved as a PNG.JPEG is good for images where the color changes fluidly throughout the image, like in a photograph, whereas PNG files are good for images with relatively few colors, such as a drawing of a flag, a chart, or a map; note that sometimes SVG is better.
To the right is an example of a file saved as JPEG when it should have been saved as PNG. JPEG uses lossy data compression meant for photographs. Compressing drawings or diagrams with JPEG results in an image of poor quality, because the human eye can spot the compression artifacts around the edges.
Group the text, create a copy, and convert the copy to paths. Then either: move the original, editable non-path text into a separate editable text layer that you make transparent (warning: this might be removed by SVG optimizers), or; move the original, editable non-path text outside the visible area (example: File:Essigsäuresynthesen.svg).
The transparency information inside a JNG file (as an alpha channel) can be saved either in lossless PNG format or in lossy JPEG format. This way, users can benefit from the power of JPEG compression while preserving lossless (PNG-compressed) transparency information.
