Action figures based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise have been produced by Playmates Toys since 1988. Staff artists at the Northampton, Massachusetts based Mirage Studios have provided conceptual designs for many of the figures, vehicles, and playsets and are credited on the packaging of the products they created.
The company's first big success was in 1986, with the marketing of a tape-playing, electronic robot doll named Cricket. [2] In 1989, the company marketed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles action figures which sold extremely well. [2] Success of the two led to a golden era from 1990 to early 1993. [3]
The 2007 film TMNT also gave Playmates a new source from which to make figures, while National Entertainment Collectibles Association produced a series of high-quality action figures based on character designs from the original Mirage comics. In 2012, a new toy line and a new classic toy line from Playmates were announced to be released.
