A shim is a thin and often tapered or wedged piece of material, used to fill small gaps or spaces between objects. [1] Shims are typically used in order to support, adjust for better fit, or provide a level surface. Shims may also be used as spacers to fill gaps between parts subject to wear.
Tolerance rings are used in a number of mechanisms throughout the automotive powertrain and steering systems, as well as the car interior and exterior. [5] Their torque limiting and overload capabilities allow them to be used as simple clutch devices in several applications, such as the automatic tailgate motor [6] and the collapsible steering column.
A shim is a precision tool used in locksmithing to bypass spring-loaded padlocks by manipulating their internal locking mechanisms. First documented in locksmith trade journals during the early 20th century, shims gained particular notoriety during World War II when military personnel used improvised versions to access secured equipment. [ 1 ]
Later engines used an improved design where the shims were located above the tappets, which allowed each shim to be changed without removing either the tappet or camshaft. A drawback of this design is that the rubbing surface of the tappet becomes the surface of the shim, which is a difficult problem of mass-production metallurgy.

Slew ring bearing. A slewing bearing or slew[ing] ring (also called a turntable bearing) is a rotational rolling-element bearing that typically supports a heavy but slow-turning or slowly-oscillating loads in combination (axial, radial and moment loads), often a horizontal platform such as a conventional crane, a swing yarder, or the wind-facing platform of a horizontal-axis (yaw) windmill.
A Wills Ring or Cooper Ring is a form of all-metallic O-ring seal. They are used for extremely arduous service, such as sealing the head gasket of high performance piston engines . Hollow, metallic Wills Rings are used as they have better springback than yielding soft metal seals and higher temperature limits than elastomer O rings.
Lifting the stone a small distance from the ground before hoisting is the best way to test a lewis. Any sign of looseness or damage should be corrected by adjusting the lewis hole or packing the lewis with metal shims. To bed a stone using a lewis, the stone is placed on dunnage laid flat with enough clearance for a mortar bed to be placed ...
