The 1990 People's Movement (Nepali: २०४६ जनआन्दोलन, romanized: 2046 Jana Andolan) was a multiparty movement in Nepal that brought an end to absolute monarchy and the beginning of constitutional monarchy. It also eliminated the Panchayat system. [2] The movement was marked by the unity between the various political parties.
On 10 January 1990, the United Left Front (ULF) was formed, [13]: 331 which, together with the Nepali Congress, was the backbone of the movement for democratic change. However, communist groups, uncomfortable with the alliance between the ULF and the Congress, formed a parallel front: the United National People's Movement (UNPM) .

However, following his defeat in Indian parliamentary elections in December 1989, new Prime Minister V.P. Singh ordered the withdrawal of the IPKF, and their last ship left Sri Lanka on 24 March 1990. The 32-month presence of the IPKF in Sri Lanka resulted in the deaths of 1200 Indian soldiers and over 5000 Sri Lankans.

The party was formerly a revolutionary movement and was involved in two armed uprisings against the government of Sri Lanka: once in 1971 , and another in 1987–1989 . The motive for both uprisings was to establish a socialist state . [ 15 ]
