Dust mite allergy, also known as house dust allergy, is a sensitization and allergic reaction to the droppings of house dust mites. The allergy is common [ 1 ] [ 2 ] and can trigger allergic reactions such as asthma , eczema or itching .
A dust mite allergy might “take on the appearance of insect bites,” or a skin rash, says Dr. Faix. It also can manifest as asthma or allergy-like upper respiratory symptoms.
Dust mite faecal pellets that can be small as 10 μm, [1] but can be contained by anti-mite fabrics of a denser pore size. [2] House dust mites (HDM, or simply dust mites) are various species of acariform mites belonging to the family Pyroglyphidae that are found in association with dust in dwellings. [3] They are known for causing allergies.
Allergens can be found in a variety of sources, such as dust mite excretion, pollen, pet dander, or even royal jelly. [2] Food allergies are not as common as food sensitivity, but some foods such as peanuts (a legume), nuts, seafood and shellfish are the cause of serious allergies in many people. [3]
Specific anti-allergy zippered covers on household items like pillows and mattresses have also proven to be effective in preventing dust mite allergies. [ 39 ] Studies have shown that growing up on a farm and having many older siblings can decrease an individual's risk for developing allergic rhinitis.
Treating allergy symptoms with over-the-counter medication, saline spray, and, if warranted, allergy medication or injections from your doctor, may also help reduce GI symptoms as a result.
