The Douglas House, also known North Branch Outing Club, was constructed in 1916 by Thomas E. Douglas to draw wealthy tourists to the area. Early club members included Henry Ford and his son Edsel , John and Horace Dodge , and Charles Nash .
Construction began in 1935, and was completed in 1936. The school was named after Moses Bingham, one of the first settlers of Alpena, and the owner of its first hotel and first gristmill. This was the last elementary school built in the city until 1950. The city continued to grow, and student enrollment peaked in 1970 at over 9000 students.

Vassar was founded by four men who were led by James M. Edmunds and Townsend North in search of an area to build a dam and start a city. The city was named after Edmunds' uncle, Matthew Vassar, who later founded Vassar College. It was the first county seat of Tuscola County. In 1860, the seat was moved to Caro.
