Alexander was born in Harlem, New York City, and grew up in Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of former United States Secretary of the Army and Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chairman Clifford Alexander Jr. [6] and Adele Logan Alexander, a professor of African-American women's history at George Washington University and writer.
Carolyn Marie Rodgers (December 14, 1940 [1] – April 2, 2010) was a Chicago-based writer, particularly noted for her poetry. [2] The youngest of four, Rodgers had two sisters and a brother, born to Clarence and Bazella Rodgers.
She wrote a tribute for black athletes for Nike [33] and has a book deal with Viking Children's Books to write two children's picture books. [34] [35] Gorman reading her poem "An American Lyric" in 2017. In 2017, Gorman became the first youth poet to open the literary season for the Library of Congress, and she has read her poetry on MTV.
