Newport is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island, United States.It is located in Narragansett Bay, approximately 33 miles (53 km) southeast of Providence, 20 miles (32 km) south of Fall River, Massachusetts, 74 miles (119 km) south of Boston, and 180 miles (290 km) northeast of New York City.
As of the 2020 census, the population was 85,643. [4] It is also one of the seven regions of Rhode Island. The county was created in 1703. [5] Like all of the counties in Rhode Island, Newport County no longer has any governmental functions (other than as court administrative and sheriff corrections boundaries).
Besides these areas, Rhode Island is mostly a middle-income state, as a majority of the population lives in the urban city Providence. 69% of Rhode Island places do however have per capita incomes higher than the national average, one of the highest percentages of any state, but 11.9% of the population lives below the poverty line.
From 2021 to 2022, all eight of RI's cities lost population, according to the bureau's estimates. But, from 2022 to 2023, 7 of those cities saw gains. 7 of 8 RI cities saw population growth last year.
