The trade school that became Makerere University began operating in 1921 with the first classes in carpentry, building construction and mechanics. [12] In 1922, it was founded as the "Uganda Technical College" with additional courses in the arts, education, agriculture and medicine.
The Ivory Tower houses the Finance and records/registry department [10] which have the students records and the basement has full archive files spanning the whole historical journey of Makerere University. [1] The Ivory Tower building is the icon for Makerere University and also considered a national pride and heritage.
In 1997, Faculty of Commerce at Makerere University was merged with NCBS, thereby creating MUBS, a constituent college of Makerere University. The staff and students of both institutions were brought together at the 45 acres (18 ha) campus at Nakawa , approximately 5.5 kilometres (3.4 mi), east of Kampala 's central business district .

Makerere University College of Health Sciences (MakCHS) is a constituent college of Makerere University, Uganda's oldest university. The schools of the college offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the biomedical sciences, health sciences, human medicine and public health, covering a broad range of disciplines and specialties.
MSWGS is located along the pool road, opposite the Swimming pool within Makerere University Premises, adjacent to Makerere University College of Business and Management Science, in Kampala, Uganda. [ 5 ]
