Sultan Salahuddin was elected as the eleventh Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 26 April 1999 and installed on 11 September 1999. He was the second oldest ruler to be elected to the position. The cession of Putrajaya, from Selangor to the Federal Government in 2001 to become a Federal Territory occurred during his reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
