Brown Thomas & Company Limited is a chain of five upmarket department stores in Ireland, with two located in Dublin, and one each in Cork, Galway, and Limerick.Together with Dublin's Arnotts department store, it is owned by UK-based Selfridges, which in turn is owned by Thai Conglomerate Central Group and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Arnotts is the oldest and largest department store in Ireland.It is located on Henry Street, on the north side of central Dublin. It was later sold in early 1990s to the Weston family, who owned Brown Thomas, and the name Switzers was dropped. [1] [6] [7] The Switzers premises on Grafton Street was refurbished and remodelled as the flagship Brown Thomas store, but the name Switzer's remains over one door on Wicklow Street. [3]
In 1862, the Dublin Builder said the street "abounds in old premises in need of doctoring up." [8] During the late 19th century, a number of retail properties were built and several long-standing businesses established their presence on the street, such as the department stores Switzer's and Brown Thomas. The jewellers Weirs opened in 1869. [11]
Department stores also often featured post services, childcare services, restaurants and other services that appealed to female shoppers. [125] Bennett's in Derby, first established as an ironmonger (hardware shop) in 1734, lays claim to being Britain's oldest department store, with the business still trading from the same building.
