Route 138 begins in Exeter at the Connecticut state line in the west and runs to the Massachusetts state line in Tiverton in the east, and is the only state-numbered route to completely cross Rhode Island. There are five historically significant buildings on the 6.2 acres (2.5 ha) that remain of a farm that was once about 44 acres (18 ha). The property has been owned by descendants of the Borden family since the early 1700s.
The oldest building in Rhode Island tested using dendrochronology was the Clemence-Irons House (1691) in Johnston, although the Lucas–Johnston House in Newport holds some timbers which were felled prior to 1650, but likely reused from an earlier building.
