The Transcantábrico is a metre-gauge tourist train service, crossing northern Spain along the Bay of Biscay.It is the oldest of Spain's tourist trains, managed by the Spanish public company FEVE since its inauguration in 1983 until 2012, when FEVE disappeared and Renfe Operadora took over.
It operates 140 km (87 mi) of narrow-gauge, 42 km (26 mi) of standard-gauge, and 89 km (55 mi) of Iberian-gauge routes, two metre-gauge rack railways and four funicular railways. FGV (Valencian: Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana, "Valencian Government Railways") operates several metre-gauge lines in the Valencian Community.
The great majority of the narrow-gauge lines that were operated by FEVE before it disappeared were located along or near Spain's Atlantic Ocean and Bay of Biscay coastline, which stretches from Galicia in the northwest, through Asturias and Cantabria to the Basque Country (with a branch extending into Castile and León).
Ferrocarriles Españoles de Vía Estrecha (FEVE), [1] officially registered as Ferrocarriles de Vía Estrecha [2] and known in its last years by the brand name Feve, was a Spanish public railway operator, founded in 1965, in charge of operating the national narrow-gauge network, whose management passed to the State after the extinction of the original owner companies.
