Schumacher-Cawley is from Chicago, Illinois, growing up in Morgan Park.She attended Mother McAuley High School, graduating in 1997.In her high school career, she played both volleyball and basketball and was arguably the greatest athlete to ever come out of Mother McAuley, leading the volleyball team to two state titles in 1994 and 1995, and a runner-up finish in 1996. On July 1, 2013, Florida Atlantic's men's soccer program moved with the rest of its athletic program to Conference USA, and Chicago State's men's tennis team followed the rest of its sports to the Western Athletic Conference. The 2014–15 school year saw one affiliate member leave for another conference and two new affiliates join.

The head coach of the Appalachian State men's basketball team is currently Dustin Kerns, previously of the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Notable past coaches include Press Maravich and Bobby Cremins. The Mountaineers have appeared in the NCAA tournament three times, 1979, 2000, and 2021 [9] and appeared in the National Invitation Tournament in 2007.
Scott Satterfield was named as Appalachian's 20th head coach on December 14, 2012. [3] The current head coach of the Mountaineers is Dowell Loggains , who was hired in December 2024.
