Programs like post-degree diploma, [3] graduate diploma, graduate certificates or a pre-medical to a master's degree in a field such as biomedical or health sciences come under the range of post-baccalaureate programs.
Pre-medical (often referred to as pre-med) is an educational track that undergraduate students mostly in the United States pursue prior to becoming medical students. It involves activities that prepare a student for medical school , such as pre-med coursework, volunteer activities, clinical experience, research, and the application process.
Academic certificates and a post-baccalaureate pre-medical certificate are also offered. Established by then-university President A. Lawrence Lowell, [4] [5] HES was commissioned to extend [6] education, equivalent in academic rigor to traditional Harvard programs, to non-traditional and part-time students, as well as lifelong learners.
The curriculum starts with fundamental coursework and expands into a full pre-medical curriculum. Students typically take the MCAT and begin medical school applications near the end of EMDP2 year one. Upon completing EMDP2 year one, students are awarded a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Pre-Medicine [9] from GMU. [7]
Cobb also established a Fifth Year Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program, which provided financial assistance and educational opportunities for minority students at the College who wanted to pursue careers in medicine or dentistry. Students were provided with resources for tutoring and counseling.
A student with a bachelor's degree who has not taken the pre-medical coursework may complete a post-baccalaureate (postbacc) program. Such programs allow rapid fulfillment of prerequisite course work as well as grade point average improvement.
