Renji Abarai (阿散井 恋次, Abarai Renji) is a fictional character in the Japanese anime and manga series Bleach created by Tite Kubo.In the series, he initially challenges Ichigo Kurosaki, the protagonist of the series, but he later joins forces with him to help rescue Rukia Kuchiki halfway through the Soul Society arc.
Renji attempts to rescue Rukia, but is confronted by his captain, Byakuya. Renji unleashes his bankai Hihiō Zabimaru, only to be overpowered when Byakuya reveals his own bankai Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. Despite being defeated, Renji manages to inflict a minor wound on his captain before collapsing from his injuries as Byakuya congratulates him.
Byakuya activates his Bankai, tells Renji to observe Äs and finds out a way to unseal it after it is sealed. However, Byakuya learns that his Bankai was not sealed, but stolen by the Quincy. Byakuya clashes with Äs, but is easily overwhelmed. Äs Nödt finishes Byakuya off by using his own Bankai against him and smashing him into a nearby wall.
After Äs Nödt defeats Byakuya, Mask De Masculine knocks Renji unconscious as he was about to activate his bankai, causing Äs Nödt to scold him. In his second attack, he is accompanied by James who carries a boxing ring bell with him and makes it look like the fights Mask engages in are wrestling matches.
Mask manages to overwhelm both Kensei and Rose, and before he could deal a final blow, Renji arrives to take over the fight while Rukia gets the captains to safety. Though overpowered by Mask's attacks, revealing his fan James to be an extension of his Quincy power, Renji reveals the true form of his Bankai: "Sōō Zabimaru".
