It seats 2,121 for hockey, with a standing room capacity of over 3,000. It is named after Max Bell, a philanthropist who was a prominent businessman in Calgary.
Opening in 1967, the arena was originally known as Loyola Arena. In 2000, it was renamed for Ed Meagher, who was an alumnus of Loyola College and the school's longtime athletic director. Construction on the arena started in 1996 and was completed in time to hold its first event on September 22, 1997. The arena is owned by West Valley City, and managed by Centennial Management Group.
