OpenStreetMap (OSM) is a free, open mapping project. It is a world map created and maintained by volunteer contributors. OSM data appears on Wikipedia on maps throughout the project. OSM data is made up of three types of features: nodes (points,) ways (lines and polygons,) and relations (multi-polygons and collections of features.)
Go to OpenStreetMap and zoom into the general area where the route runs. Switch to the "Transport Map" layer using the 'Layers' sidebar on the right. Now you should see all the transit routes highlighted on the map, with numbers indicating the route numbers. Select a route by right-clicking (control-click on Macs) and selecting 'Query features'.
Under 'normal use', this works as previously, to set the size of the text. Two additional text features are now available, to fill a beige 'under-colour' behind the label, to blank out any bits of map that make the label unreadable; and to put a 1px black rounded outline around the label, to help highlight it.
OSM Location map allows an editor to include a map in a frame with a zoom level appropriate to the topic. A scale marker is provided in the bottom right corner. This is at best a rough guide to the distances on the map, as the map projection results in scale changes depending on the latitude.
