Bottomless Lakes State Park is a state park in the U.S. state of New Mexico, located along the Pecos River, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Roswell. Established in 1933, it was the first state park in New Mexico. [2] It takes its name from nine small, deep lakes located along the eastern escarpment of the Pecos River valley.
The system began with the establishment of Bottomless Lakes State Park on November 18, 1933. [1] New Mexico currently has 35 state parks. It has been calculated that 70% of the state's population lives within 40 miles (64 km) of a New Mexico state park. [ 2 ]
The site is located adjacent the southeast corner of Bottomless Lake State Park, about 12 miles southeast of Roswell, New Mexico.The site was excavated by the University of Michigan Museum of Anthropology in 1977 and 1978 [1] [2] and an adjacent site originally thought to be the campsite. [3]

Five campgrounds, picnic areas and restrooms; Two group shelters; Trails access the Taos plateau, Guadalupe Mountain, back country campsites or down to the river beds. Petroglyphs are visible on the walls of the gorge. Many of the trails begin at the campgrounds. The recreation area is wheelchair accessible. [1]
The West Malpais Wilderness was created on December 31, 1987, with the passage of Public Law 100-225 by the 100th Congress.
