The Basilica of St. Mary of the Assumption is a Minor Basilica of the Catholic Church located in Lancaster, Ohio, United States, and a parish church of the Diocese of Columbus. The parish was founded in 1818 and the current church building was completed in 1864.
The first Mass was said at the Church of the Incarnation on 600 Alabama Avenue in 1916. Pastor John Horstkamp acquired property on Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. (then known as Nichols Ave.) and built a multipurpose hall at the location of the present day Assumption Church. The old church remained in place and continued in use while the new church was built around it. [2] When it was time to put on the roof, the old church was dismantled and rebuilt in a near-by location. Parishioners helped in the construction of their new church. Bishop Fitzpatrick returned to dedicate the new St. Mary's Church on December 16, 1855.
The church was consecrated by Bishop Hartley on December 12, 1909. The stained glass windows were created in Munich, Germany. In 1945 St. Mary's transferred to the newly established Diocese of Steubenville. Pope Francis decreed on June 13, 2013 that St. Mary's Church was elevated to the status of a minor basilica. [3]

St. Mary's was the second Catholic parish established in Trenton after St. John's, which was located on the present site of Sacred Heart Church on South Broad Street. [2] Ground was broken for the parish church on April 23, 1866, and it was dedicated on January 1, 1871, by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley of Newark.
[6] [7] In 1941 the cathedral was extensively renovated and a new altar, which replaced the altar that had been used in the second church, was placed in the church. A new two-story convent was built in 1956. The cathedral was extensively renovated in 1978. The altar and the cathedra were moved to the main floor area of the church from the apse.
The cornerstone was laid on December 13, 1967, and the cathedral was completed three years later. On May 5, 1971, the cathedral was blessed and on October 5, 1996, was formally dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the name of Saint Mary of the Assumption. The first Papal Mass was celebrated by Pope John Paul II in the cathedral in 1987.
