Map of Grays Harbor. Grays Harbor is an estuarine bay located 45 miles (72 km) north of the mouth of the Columbia River, on the southwest Pacific coast of Washington state, in the United States. It is a ria, which formed at the end of the last ice age, when sea levels flooded the Chehalis River.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Columbia River was dammed and jetties were built along its mouth and farther north at Grays Harbor, where the Chehalis River meets the Pacific Ocean.
Grays River is a tributary of the Columbia River, approximately 30 miles (48 km) long, [3] in southwestern Washington in the United States. One of the last tributaries of the Columbia on the Washington side, it drains an area of low hills north of the mouth of the river.
After each ice dam rupture, the waters of the lake would rush down the Clark Fork and the Columbia River, flooding much of eastern Washington and the Willamette Valley in western Oregon. After the lake drained, the ice would reform, creating Glacial Lake Missoula again. These floods have been researched since the 1920s.
