Trainfest started in 1971 as a one-day show in a Milwaukee Veterans of Foreign Wars hall. [1] Today, Trainfest is a two-day event sponsored by the Wisconsin Southeastern (WISE) division of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA) and takes over 200,000 square feet (19,000 m 2) of the Wisconsin Exposition Center during the second weekend of November. The Great American Train Show is the name of what was, for two decades, the largest traveling model train show in the United States. The company was incorporated in 1985 and went defunct in 2006. During the 1990s, the company operated as many as 90 train shows every year in 40 different states.
The route was formerly operated by the FWWR and was known as the Tarantula train. In 1999 and for a short period of time the FWWR contracted with Coe Rail, Inc. for operation of the Tarantula train. [2] An accident with a freight train in 2000 caused the Fort Worth & Western to sever the relationship and took back control of passenger operations.
The train took off at 8:45, just as I sat down for breakfast. A couple and I were the only remaining passengers to feed. As is typical on an Amtrak train, we were seated together.
