Since Białowieża means the "white tower", the corresponding Puszcza Białowieska translates as the "forest of the white tower". The Tower of Kamyenyets on the Belarusian side, built of red brick, is also referred to as the White Tower ( Belaya Vezha ) even though it was never white, perhaps taking the name from the pushcha .
