Lake Hodges is a popular location for hiking, birding, fishing, kayaking, windsurfing, photography, and picnicking. It is surrounded by the hiking trails of the San Dieguito River Park and those trails are connected to the park's 65 miles of trails .
The park included 925 acres (3.74 km 2) referred to as Hodges Gardens and featured 60 acres (240,000 m 2) of gardens, a 225-acre (0.9 km 2) area, which included a lighthouse, bass fishing lake, hiking and biking trails, and RV and wilderness camping.
It does not sit on a river or stream but is supplied with water by a system of pumps and pipes. The dam is connected to Lake Hodges and the Second San Diego Aqueduct. When Lake Hodges Dam was built in 1917–1918, the area began to develop rapidly. The creation of the 12,000-acre (49 km 2 ) Santa Fe Irrigation District in 1918 ensured that the area from Rancho Santa Fe through Solana Beach would prosper and expand.
