The service is composed of Psalms, ektenias (litanies), hymns and prayers. In its outline it follows the general order of Matins [note 2] and is, in effect, a truncated funeral service. Some of the most notable portions of the service are the Kontakion of the Departed [note 3] and the final singing of "Memory Eternal" (Slavonic: Vyechnaya Pamyat).
Each day of the week possesses a distinct psalm that is referred to by its Hebrew name as the shir shel yom and each day's shir shel yom is a different paragraph of Psalms. [ 2 ] Although fundamentally similar to the Levite's song that was sung at the Holy Temple in Jerusalem in ancient times, there are some differences between the two.
The kathismata are divided up between Vespers and Matins, so that all 150 psalms are read during the course of the week. Normally there is one kathisma at Vespers and either two or three at Matins, depending on the day of the week and the time of the year, according to the Church's liturgical calendar.
An antiphon or verse was sung by all followed by extended verses of the psalm for the day with an intervening antiphon every so often. Fathers of the Church mentioning this format include Augustine, John Chrysostom and Leo the Great. [5] The responsorial psalm was seen as an integral part of the liturgy with its own significance.
