What3words. What3words (stylized as what3words) is a proprietary geocode system designed to identify any location on the surface of Earth with a resolution of about 3 metres (9.8 ft). It is owned by What3words Limited, based in London, England. The system encodes geographic coordinates into three permanently fixed dictionary words.
An advantage of 3 random words over 12+ digits of a coordinate pair is that it can be transferred over a faltering mobile phone faster, not that it is less error-prone. In both cases it is needed to repeat and confirm the words/numbers to check for mishearing.
Geocode. A geocode is a code that represents a geographic entity (location or object). It is a unique identifier of the entity, to distinguish it from others in a finite set of geographic entities.
