Brian Ian Muir (born 15 April 1952) is a British sculptor who most famously created Darth Vader's helmet and armour using Ralph McQuarrie's design. The company was founded by Andrew Ainsworth, who was asked in January 1976 to manufacture first the helmets, then the body armour for the Imperial stormtroopers (based on pre-existing sculpts from Liz Moore [1] and Brian Muir [2]) in the classic Star Wars films.
The character was conceived by George Lucas, designed by artist Ralph McQuarrie, sculpted by Liz Moore [6] and Brian Muir, [7] and finally molded from the existing designs by Andrew Ainsworth. Before the case came to court, Ainsworth had sold replica Stormtrooper outfits online for many years causing Lucasfilm to sue for infringement of copyright.
Based on conceptual drawings by Ralph McQuarrie, Liz Moore and Nick Pemberton sculpted designs for the helmet, while Brian Muir sculpted armor pieces for the stormtrooper costume. Muir, who was also responsible for sculpting the Darth Vader costume, worked out of the Art Department at Elstree Studios.
