Cambridge, Massachusetts: Harvard University Press. ISBN 978-0-674-95010-8. Matheson Connell, Carol (2004). A Business in Risk – Jardine Matheson and the Hong Kong Trading Industry. Praeger.
For tax purposes, Matheson & Co. was a subsidiary of Jardine Matheson. In practice, the proprietors in Scotland made the decisions and transmitted them to Hong Kong through the London office. [13] As London grew as an international financial hub, in the 1960s Matheson & Co. expanded their merchant banking operations. [14]
The company is controlled by the Keswick family, who are descendants of co-founder William Jardine's older sister, Jean Johnstone. Jardine Matheson is a Fortune Global 500 company. [11] In 2013, both Jardine Matheson and Jardine Strategic were among the top 200 publicly traded companies in the world, as valued by market capitalisation. [12]

John Keswick became a member of the Hong Kong Executive Council in 1952. He retired as Tai-pan in 1953 and joined Matheson & Co in 1956. He returned temporarily as non-executive chairman of Jardine Matheson in Hong Kong from 1970 to 1972. While in England, he and his brother financed the buy-out and then public flotation of Jardine Matheson.
He arrived in the Far East in 1870 and remained there for 26 years. He became a partner of the Messrs Jardine, Matheson & co. and taipan of the firm from the 1890s. He founded Hongkong Land together with his close associate Sir Paul Chater. This was a development company established in 1889 which remained closely associated with Jardine Matheson.
In 1865 he became head of Jardine, Matheson and Co., one of the largest Far East trading houses based in Hong Kong. [1] At the general election in July 1865, Jardine was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashburton in Devon [2] where his uncle William Jardine had been an earlier MP.
The eldest son of William Paterson, a former partner at Jardine Matheson & Co. in the 1870s and 1880s, J. J. Paterson followed in his father's footsteps, becoming managing director of the firm in the 1930s. [1] He also served as chairman of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation on three occasions between 1932 and 1941. [2] [3]
