There are currently two described subspecies: Panaque nigrolineatus laurafabiane Ortega-Lara & Lujan, 2020 (Watermelon pleco) and P. n. nigrolineatus W. K. H. Peters, 1877 (the nominate subspecies). P. n. laurafabiane is found in the Guaviare river in the southwest Orinoco basin. It is known as the 'Watermelon pleco' in the aquarium trade.
