The 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment was initially formed at Fort Benning (today Fort Moore), Georgia on 20 July 1942, under command of Colonel George V. Millett. It would participate in three operations during World War II: D-Day, the Battle of the Bulge and Operation Varsity.
Lawson and Ft. Benning had many distinguished visitors during the war including Gen. George C. Marshall, Gen. Hap Arnold, Lord Louis Mountbatten and Anthony Eden, the British Foreign Secretary. Moore's first assignment after graduation was the Infantry Officer Basic Course at Fort Benning, Georgia, which was a six-week course. During the basic course he applied for the airborne jump school at Fort Benning. He was not selected, and was instead assigned to the three-week jump school held at the 11th Airborne Division in Tokyo, Japan. [12]
