Sounds of the 60s is a long-running Saturday morning programme on BBC Radio 2 that features recordings of popular music made in the 1960s. It was first broadcast on 12 February 1983 and introduced by Keith Fordyce, who had been the first presenter of the TV show Ready Steady Go! in 1963.
Brian Matthew (17 September 1928 – 8 April 2017) [1] [2] was an English broadcaster who worked for the BBC for 63 years from 1954 until 2017. He was the host of Saturday Club, among other programmes, and began presenting Sounds of the 60s in March 1990, often employing the same vocabulary and the same measured delivery he had used in previous decades.
Born in Ealing, London, Swern was a record producer [1] and songwriter, [2] and also wrote for television. [3] He earned the nickname "The Collector" from working on Sounds of the 60s with Brian Matthew. He produced Pick of the Pops for BBC Radio 1 in the late 1980s and early 1990s and produced the show for BBC Radio 2 from 1997 to 2023.
BBC Radio 2 occasionally broadcasts Lefèvre's 1968 recording, particularly on its Saturday morning show Sounds of the 60s. The song is also used in the analog horror web series The Monument Mythos as the theme song of the character AirForceOneAngel
Keith Fordyce Marriott (15 October 1928 – 15 March 2011) was an English disc jockey and presenter on British radio and television. He was both the first presenter of the ITV television pop music programme Thank Your Lucky Stars in 1961 and of the youth-orientated magazine show Ready Steady Go! on Associated-Rediffusion from 1963 to 1965.
In December 1987 Dee joined BBC Radio 2. His first broadcast for the station was on Boxing Day that year when he hosted a listeners' all-time-favourite Top 20. In early 1988 he became a guest presenter on the station's Sounds of the 60s programme on a Saturday morning. He then began hosting the show on a temporary basis between April and July.
4 March – Tony Blackburn succeeds Brian Matthew as presenter of BBC Radio 2's Sounds of the 60s. The two-hour show also moves to the earlier time of 6am, and Zoe Ball rejoins the station on permanent basis to host a new Saturday mid-afternoon show, while Dermot O'Leary takes over from Anneka Rice on Saturday weekend breakfast.
On Saturday 7 February 2009, Walker began a new ten-week series called Pirate Johnnie Walker on BBC Radio 2. This show recreated the sounds of pirate radio from the 1960s and included other Pirate DJs from the era as guests. [citation needed] On 5 April 2009, Walker took over a Sunday afternoon (3 – 5 pm) show on Radio 2 called Sounds of the 70s.
