Samuel Gerald Jones (born August 12, 1954), known professionally as Sam J. Jones, is an American actor and former football player. He is known for playing the title character in the 1980 film Flash Gordon and for starring in the short-lived TV series The Highwayman (1987–1988).
It chronicles the making of the 1980 film version of Flash Gordon and its eventual cult following, with particular focus placed on how the life and career of the film's lead, Sam J. Jones (who also served as an executive producer on this film), was affected by his falling-out with producer Dino De Laurentiis.
