Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) is an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) initiative that encourages private industry and federal agencies to prevent workplace injuries and illnesses through hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis, training; and cooperation between management and workers.
The Voluntary Protection Programs Participants’ Association, Inc. (VPPPA), is a nonprofit association of cooperative safety and health management systems. It organizes the largest VPP education event of the year, and promotes occupational health and safety. Membership with the association is established on a site-by-site basis.
State plans are OSHA-approved job safety and health programs operated by individual states instead of federal OSHA. Federal OSHA approves and monitors all state plans and provides as much as fifty percent of the funding for each program. State-run safety and health programs are required to be at least as effective as the federal OSHA program.
"At OSHA, we will use this location as an example of how businesses can not only meet, but exceed requirements for VPP certification," said Terri Penn, OSHA Region III VPP Manager.
