General Matthew Bunker Ridgway (3 March 1895 – 26 July 1993) was a senior officer in the United States Army, who served as Supreme Allied Commander Europe (1952–1953) and the 19th Chief of Staff of the United States Army (1953–1955).

Benner was born on May 6, 1904, in Piqua, Ohio, the son of realtor and merchant Walter Phillip Benner and his wife Daisy.He graduated from the Piqua High School in summer 1921 and worked for one year as a reporter for the Piqua Dailly Call, before receiving an appointment to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland.
