An advanced practice nurse (APN) is a nurse with post-graduate education and training in nursing. Nurses practicing at this level may work in either a specialist or generalist capacity. APNs are prepared with advanced didactic and clinical education, knowledge, skills, and scope of practice in nursing.
In order for an advanced practice nurse to gain prescriptive authority in the state of Minnesota, the APRN needs to have graduated from an accredited school of nursing program and passed a national certificate exam in at least one specialty area, such as nurse practitioner, nurse anesthetist, or nurse midwife.
