The High Resolution Coronal Imager (Hi-C) is a sub-orbital telescope designed to take high-resolution images of the Sun's corona. As of 2020 [update] it has been launched three times, but only the first and the third launches, on July 11, 2012, and May 29, 2018, resulted in a successful mission. [ 1 ]
The Solar Orbiter, a joint mission between the European Space Agency and NASA that launched in February 2020, orbits the sun from an average distance of 26 million miles (42 million kilometers).
Therefore, the NASA pictures are legally in the public domain. Photographs and other NASA images should include the NASA image number if you have it, for easy reference. When accessing space photographs, be sure that you know the source. Pictures not produced by NASA employees may have different usage restrictions.
The detailed images recorded by SDO in 2011–2012 have helped scientists uncover new secrets about the Sun. The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is a NASA mission which has been observing the Sun since 2010. [4] Launched on 11 February 2010, the observatory is part of the Living With a Star (LWS) program. This is an image taken at infrared wavelengths, so it is not even visible with the naked eye, and "reality" would not be in black and white. (Would be closer to red colour.) Many great astronomy pictures are shown in false colours, since there is no easy representation of a narrowband wavelength. 02:25, 21 April 2022: 7,320 × 7,320 (17.87 MB)
