Portable transformers that transform single-phase 240 V to this 110 V split-phase system are a common piece of construction equipment. Generator sets used for construction sites are equipped to supply it directly. However, a large farm may be given a 230–0–230 (nominal) supply.
Lighting and general purpose receptacles are at 120 volts AC, with larger devices fed by three wire single-phase circuits at 240 volts. In commercial construction, three-phase circuits are often used. Common 3 phase configurations within a building are 208v/120 wye, 120/240 center tapped delta and 480v/277v wye. Lighting is usually fed by 277 V ...
Single-phase generator (also known as single-phase alternator) is an alternating current electrical generator that produces a single, continuously alternating voltage. Single-phase generators can be used to generate power in single-phase electric power systems.
Single-phase motors may have taps to allow their use on either 208-volt or 240-volt supply. A single-phase load may be powered directly from a three-phase distribution transformer in two ways: by connection between one phase and neutral or by connection between two phases. These two give different voltages from a given supply.
This allows one to choose single-phase AC power at either 110–120 volts between phase and neutral or 220–240 volts between phase and phase. Since these two modes do not need three phases there is also a dark yellow-orange four-pin connector available designed for a single-phase 110–120 or 220–240 volt load.
English: Diagram of revolving-field single phase generator with four poles. As the rotor turns, the lines of force at fours poles are cut by the coils inducing current. The output from four coils are "in phase". The direction of current changes to the opposite side every 90 degrees of the rotation.
NEMA L6 connectors are rated for a maximum of 250 volts. They are intended for two-pole, three wire, line-line-earth (or hot-hot-ground) circuits with a nominal supply voltage of 208 or 240 volts, depending on phase configuration. The L6 connector does not provide a neutral connection.
At low voltage electricity may be supplied by the distributor (DNO) as either single or three phase. A single phase supply will comprise a single line conductor and a neutral conductor. A three phase supply will comprise three line conductors each pair with a phase separation of 120 degrees and (optionally) a neutral conductor.
