Colonel Richard Morris held a number of public offices, including Commissary for the Commonwealth, and was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates in 1788. Morris operated a small resort at the Green Springs with two houses, an icehouse, servant quarters, a blacksmith shop and utility buildings, which were abandoned by Richard's son and heir James Maury Morris.
The sale of the property was managed by Plante Moran Real Estate Investment Advisors, which asked for proposals by Dec. 19, 2016. The community and alumni formed a nonprofit, Belmead on the James, to mount a fundraising campaign. [4] In June 2019, the property was sold to Jeff Oakley for $6 million. [7]
The courthouse was built about 1766, and is a one-story, T-shaped brick structure with a hipped roof. Other notable buildings include the Botetourt Hotel (now the Botetourt Administration Building, c. 1770); the Botetourt Lodge; W. C. Tucker's Department Store Building; S and S Hobbies; and the Kearn's Real Estate storage house. [3]
