This list includes ships that are owned and leased by the US Navy; ships that are formally commissioned, by way of ceremony, and non-commissioned. Ships denoted with the prefix "USS" are commissioned ships. Prior to commissioning, ships may be described as a pre-commissioning unit or PCU, but are officially referred to by name with no prefix. List of United States Navy ships is a comprehensive listing of all ships that have been in service to the United States Navy during the history of that service. The US Navy maintains its official list of ships past and present at the Naval Vessel Register (NVR), [ 1 ] although it does not include early vessels.
The ships are listed by type. Only ship types for which there exist a ship longer than 300 metres (1,000 ft) are included. For each type, the list includes current record-holders either as individual ships, ship classes or standard designs, up to four runner-ups, and all longer ships that have been scrapped.
