The name was used on most trucks in the Studebaker E-series, but not all. The Transtar name was first introduced for the 1956 (2E series) model year in 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton, 1-ton, 2-ton, and 2-ton heavy duty capacities. The three smaller models were available with factory-built pick-up bodies.
In 1950 the next generation of tactical trucks were being developed. Sizes were rationalized, with 1 ⁄ 4 and 3 ⁄ 4-ton 4x4s and 2 + 1 ⁄ 2, 5, and 10-ton 6x6s. Trucks were military standard designs, 6x6 trucks used common cabs and similar fender and hood styles. [14]
The G-506 trucks, 1 + 1 ⁄ 2-ton, 4x4, produced as the Chevrolet G7100 (and originally G4100) models, were a series of (light) medium four wheel drive trucks used by the United States Army and its allies during and after World War II. This series came in standard cargo, as well as many specialist type bodies.
At the bottom of the range, Dodge offered the three now common pick-up classes (1 ⁄ 2-ton, 3 ⁄ 4-ton and one-ton), as well as a 1 1 ⁄ 2-ton pickup. Dodge's half-ton pickups, on a 116 in (2.95 m) wheelbase with a 7 1 ⁄ 2 -foot box, now had the 70-horsepower 201-cubic-inch L-head straight-six.
Thus, the ½ ton Dodge was now called the D100. The traditional separate-fender body "Utiline" version remained available, with a GVWR of up to 9,000 lb (4,100 kg) on 1-ton models. After an agreement between Dodge and Studebaker, the C-Series' pickup bed also saw use in the Studebaker Champ pickup truck range. [3] [4] [5]
The M-series Studebaker trucks came in several versions both pre and post WW II. The M-5 was a 1/2 ton truck, available in a pickup configuration as well as a cab and rolling chassis. The M15 was the 3/4 ton version. The M15A was the one & 1 + 1 ⁄ 2-ton version. The M5, M15, and M15A all came with the Champion 169 ci. engine only.
