Loyola: It’s probably the least competitive of the mid tier Chicago programs because of its combined ranking and location (it’s really located in a suburb which is a good 30-45 minute drive from downtown Chicago). That said, I think it’s a superb place. The program is very resident-centered and you will he worked hard.
With that in mind, I would apply broadly to the best IM programs in the country. In terms of reputation and match lists, you can use the following tier system as a rough guide where to apply, with the caveat that all are excellent training programs: Tier 1A: Hopkins, MGH, Brigham, UCSF. Tier 1B: Columbia, Penn, Duke.
3) Mayo, MN (don't want to live in Rochester, but I feel the Mayo name would take me places other programs wouldn't) 4) Chicago (best location, but the Duke and Mayo names beat it out) 5) Pitt. 6) UTSW. Really looking at 1 vs 2 vs 3, and if Chicago is worth being in the discussion for top 3.
I dug through specialty forums for a long time and compiled a list of the very top residency programs. These are not based on any objective criteria, but rather what people report to have a strong national reputation for quality clinical training, mentors who are leaders in the field, research...
This will help maintain a good work and life balance better than anything else. #29. I agree that the amount of paperwork that we have to do nowadays in residency is pretty absurd. However, this is why you spend a lot of doing it in your intern year. This allows you to become efficient and quick.
Underrated - programs with large patient volume but doesn't have great recognition outside of the tri-state area/east coast Some of the NYC programs outside of the big 4 honestly still have pretty fantastic training and good fellowship matches, but are pooh-poohed on SDN and easily dismissed in the prestige-crazed threads.

Sep 26, 2007. #2. from what i've heard, baylor, UT houston, UTSW (dallas), UTMB (austin), and UTHSCSA (san antonio) are the best programs in texas for IM. baylor is probably the most competitive of the five. all i know about the others is that UTMB (galveston) has about 50% IMGs. i haven't heard anything about Texas A&M or the Texas Tech programs.
Here are my rankings of IM programs. First Tier: Hopkins, Brigham, MGH. The best of the best. If you can go to one of these programs, leap at it. Second Tier: UCSF, Duke, University of Pennsylvania, Columbia. All 4 of these programs are great but a very slight notch below the top 3.
