The TIP series is published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an operational division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services .
Opioid agonist therapy (OAT) is a treatment in which prescribed opioid agonists are given to patients who live with opioid use disorder (OUD). [1] In the case of methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) , methadone is used to treat dependence on heroin or other opioids , and is administered on an ongoing basis.
Opioid replacement therapy (ORT), also known as opioid substitution therapy (OST) or Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), involves replacing an opioid, such as heroin. [ 112 ] [ 113 ] Commonly used drugs for ORT are methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone ( Suboxone ), which are taken under medical supervision. [ 113 ]
Naltrexone, sold under the brand name Revia among others, is a medication primarily used to manage alcohol use or opioid use disorder by reducing cravings and feelings of euphoria associated with substance use disorder. [8] It has also been found effective in the treatment of other addictions and may be used for them off-label. [12]
To improve opioid treatment programs in the criminal justice setting, the National Institute on Drug Abuse created 13 principles to help shape programs. These principles provide guidelines for creating new treatment programs and are used to help increase the likelihood the treatment programs will succeed. The 13 principles are: [4]
