The marionberry (Rubus L. subgenus Rubus) is a cultivar of blackberry released in 1956 by the USDA Agricultural Research Service breeding program in cooperation with Oregon State University. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] It is named after Marion County, Oregon , where the berry was bred and tested extensively in the mid-20th century.

Walter Knott was the first to commercially cultivate the berry in Southern California. [4] He began selling the berries at his farm stand in 1932 and soon noticed that people kept returning to buy the large, tasty berries.
Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park has been owned and operated by Ohio-based Cedar Fair since 1997. The company plans to merge with Six Flags, operator of Magic Mountain in Valencia.
