The font sizes and types are independent of browser settings or CSS. Font sizes and types will often deviate from what HTML renders. Graphs in books tend to use LaTeX conventions, but yet again there are wide variations. For ease of reference diagrams and graphs should use the same conventions as the text that refers to them. If there is a better illustration with a different convention, though, the better illustration should normally be used.
