In 1982, Ilitch bought the Detroit Red Wings from Bruce Norris (whose family had owned the team for 50 years) for US$8 million, and turned the team into a perennial contender for the Stanley Cup. After years of drafting top picks and grooming their young players, and with proper management and leadership, the Red Wings became an elite NHL team.
By the 1930s, the Norris family, owners of the Red Wings, had formed Olympia Stadium Corporation as a management company for the arena. In 1979, Olympia Stadium Corporation became the management company for the newly built Joe Louis Arena, which was owned by the city of Detroit and leased to the Red Wings.

Bruce Arthur Norris (February 19, 1924 – January 1, 1986) was owner of the Detroit Red Wings professional ice hockey team from 1952 to 1982. He was the son of James E. Norris and half-brother of James D. Norris. Members of the Norris family owned the Red Wings for almost fifty years before selling the franchise to Mike Ilitch in 1982.
