Merseyside originally constituted a region in itself, but in 1998 it was merged into the North West England region, creating the nine present-day regions. The 2008–2011 sub-regions, each had its own Sub-regional Implementation Framework. [5] In 2011, the sub-regions were revised again. The 2011 sub-regions are used for statutory monitoring, engagement and resource allocation. [6] The sub-regions have remained static since 2011, unchanged in the 2016 published plan and 2019 draft plan.

The region [1] of South East England is divided into 91 parliamentary constituencies, which are made up of 27 borough constituencies and 64 county constituencies. Since the general election of July 2024, 35 are represented by Labour MPs, 30 by Conservative MPs, 24 by Liberal Democrat MPs, 1 by a Green MP, and 1 by an independent MP.
