A needlestick injury is the penetration of the skin by a hypodermic needle or other sharp object that has been in contact with blood, tissue or other body fluids before the exposure. [1] Even though the acute physiological effects of a needlestick injury are generally negligible, these injuries can lead to transmission of blood-borne diseases ...
Safety syringe. A safety syringe is a syringe with a built-in safety mechanism to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries to healthcare workers and others. The needle on a safety syringe can be detachable or permanently attached. On some models, a sheath is placed over the needle, whereas in others the needle retracts into the barrel.
Needlestick prevention advocacy. Karen Daley is an American nurse, past president of the American Nurses Association, former director of the American Nurses Credentialing Center and an advocate for the prevention of needlestick injury in healthcare. Daley, a former emergency room nurse, sits on the boards of trustees for several organizations.
She was a nurse's aide in 1990, when she received a needlestick injury while clearing a table in an emergency room. She learned two months later that she was HIV-positive. She worked for changes in the law to require hospitals to use safety needles to prevent similar injuries in others.
To help prevent accidental needlestick injury to the person administering the injection, and prevent reuse of the syringe for another injection, a safety syringe and needle may be used. [44] The most basic reuse prevention device is an "auto-disable" plunger, which once pressed past a certain point will no longer retract.
There are various needle stick injury prevention devices available for use in routine dental procedures. One example is of a single use syringe barrel which removes the risk of re-sheathing a needle as there is a plastic shield which slides down to safely cover the sharp point.
Needleless connector. In medicine, a needleless connector connects to the end of vascular catheters and enable catheter access for infusion and aspiration. [1] Needleless connectors (also known as NC's) were developed to reduce needlestick injuries, which occurs when the skin is accidentally punctured by a used needle. [2]
Wear disposable gloves when providing care, particularly if you may come into contact with blood or bodily fluids. Dispose of gloves properly and change gloves when providing care to a new patient. Use needles with safety devices to help prevent needlestick injury and exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
