Kempton Park Racecourse is a horse racing track together with a licensed entertainment and conference venue in Sunbury-on-Thames, Surrey, England, on the border with Greater London; it is 13 miles west of Charing Cross in central London.
The Freebooter Handicap Chase, currently run as the William Hill Handicap Chase, is a Premier Handicap National Hunt Grade 3 handicap chase in Great Britain which is open to horses aged five years or older.
The race is for novice chasers, and it is scheduled to take place each year in late December during the course's Christmas Festival. The event is named in honour of Wayward Lad , a winner of Kempton's most prestigious race, the King George VI Chase , three times during the 1980s.
The winner of the first, Southern Hero, remains the race's oldest ever winner. After the war the racecourse re-opened, and the event returned in 1947 on a new date – Boxing Day . The King George VI Chase is now the second most prestigious chase in England, surpassed only by the Cheltenham Gold Cup .
